Conclusion

Several Summaries are concluded after our research about the sexual openness and economic activity in this field, mainly in Hong Kong.

First of all, there are no big difference between the online sex shop and the sex shop in reality. Shops in real life contains elements ,like real tester product, some demonstration by the sales, which can let the customers the try out some sex toys or equipment they need and feel interested. However, the rise of the cybershops and the social media with promoting purpose is eliminating the gap between shop owner(s) and consumers. The owner and the sales of Sally’s Toy always post out some tips posts on Instagram, or do live stream video on Facebook, introducing the usage of the toys and answering customers questions, which let the public know more about what they want and relieve the public’s doubts. This shows the shop online contains the same function of the real shop.

Moreover, we can see the Hong Kong citizens nowadays become more open-minded towards the sex-related topics, like those toys usage. Customers started to comment their views through social platform like Facebook or Instagram by their own real account. In old days, people will just discuss those topic through HKGolden or LIHKG, which users will only comment with their fake names and unknown icon, not willing to let others to know about their sex-related views, which matches with the panopticon theory, the public mindset and the traditional opinions create a virtual control towards the netizens opinions. People talking about sex will be seen as dirty, impolite image. However, these kind of panopticon did not stay last and the bold comments by the real account shows the control is vanishing.

What’s more, Sex education takes an essential part of sex shop, and sex education in Hong Kong needs to be improved and updated. We can see the sex knowledge of Hong Kong citizens are not all-rounded, comparing to the western countries and other Asian countries nearby. Sex is still a taboo in Hong Kong. Sex shops like this can promote more about sex to the public and promote the sex topic to new generation teenagers. Sex shops in western countries and other Asian countries like japan are high key and located all around the city, which shows they are not afraid or embarrassed talking about it and feel free to discuss about it. This is what Hong Kong citizens still have a long way to achieve.

The concept of panopticon may not be appropriate to apply to the case of Hong Kong. Although some are still awkward when talking about sex, most HongKongers are open-minded, and the society of Hong Kong is not that panopticon-like, thus the surveillance of panopticon does not work.
