Interview Subject


We invited Miki who is a staff of the sex shop, called Sally’s Toy, to have an interview with us. The interview held about two hours in their shop which near the central station in afternoon. We asked her some questions about the sex shop where she is working on and our research question, for instance, is the level of sexual openness of Hongkongers being more open-minded. She also introduced some sex education and knowledge of sex toy to us.

Firstly, for the information of Sally’s Toy, their target customers are ladies and visitor regardless of their ages, they might be young or old. There are different kinds of products sold in the shop like massage oil, sex toys, underwear and nursing products. They want to provide some high quality products having well beautiful design to their customers. For example, one of their products is a women’s masturbation stick which gained “Red Dot Design Award” before. They aim to not only fulfilling men’s sexual fantasy, but also letting people enjoy on sex after using their products. They will promote their shop, products and sex education on their Facebook page, Instagram account and YouTube channel by videos made by them.

Secondly, the most important part is the policy of Sally’s Toy that they hired some staff with high education background and good communication skills, so most of their stuff are university graduate students or have their own profession which are interrelated work experience, interrelated profession. To make sure that their shop can provide the most professional information and advice of sex or sexual products, all the employees are having good communication skills and presentable so that they can well presented to every customers. They warrant every customers are able to have a good sex education, and therefore, those staff will clearly explain the using process and maintenance after customers buying their products, which are also related to our research topic and we will mention later.

Last but not least, for the sake of linking to our research question, Miki told us the attitude of customers are becoming more opened in these year, they will tell the staff in the sex shop what they need and willing to listen to advice from the staff, while only small proportion of people feel awkward, yet most of them still feel curious and need suggestion. Moreover, Sally’s Toy have the online sales service, and there are no big difference between selling on the internet and real shop. If customers have any questions, they will come to the real shop and ask those staff. Internet selling is a way more convenient for Hongkongers, and this have no relationship with the open-minded level.

To conclude, it is found that the view and feeling of sex of Hongkongers may not led by the panopticon-like society. Only small proportion of people buy sex products from online shop in order to making themselves feeling less awkward. Hongkongers are in fact do not mind buying sex products and listen to advice from staff about sex education in the real sex shop.
